Main Steps to Write a Research Paper
Writing research paper is one of the obligatory activities provided for students in universities. It considers one or more interrelated problems of a particular subject and is aimed to develop research abilities and skills to work with information gathering and analyzing it from the certain perspective. This is a full-fledged mini-research on a certain narrow topic.
Main Types of a Research
Scientific-theoretical investigations describe the results of studies performed on the basis of theoretical search and explanation of phenomena and their patterns.
- Scientific and practical (empirical) ones are built on the basis of experiments and real experience.
- Reviews are devoted to the analysis of scientific achievements in a certain field over the past few years.
- An analytical research paper presupposes the presentation of own conclusions and the intermediate or final results of their scientific research, experimental or analytical activities.
Such an article should contain author’s work, conclusions, and recommendations. This means that, first of all, the scientific article should have the novelty effect. The results stated in it should not be published earlier. By publishing this academic paper, the author fixes the priority in the chosen field of research.
Starting Your Research
If a student is preparing an article for a certain publication, magazine, collection, he should study the requirements for the articles received in it such as volume, design, a circle of topics. Then a student can reflect on the topic of the article. The initial step is to review the material already available and consider how it can be used to write an article. Having determined the topic, a student needs to make an approximate plan of the article and think about how and in what order to state the material. Now it is time to decide what materials and secondary sources are needed in addition in order to make full and reasoned conclusions. The most reasonable decision will be to go to the library and look through the materials. It is also worth to visit the online library website since it always contains new publications that may be not available in the library of a university.
After collecting the necessary material, group it, analyze and summarize it. To better understand the scope of the work performed and the results of your activity, present the material in a visual form. You can draw charts, diagrams, graphs, tables. This will not only help you to organize the information yourself, but your readers will better understand you and use your material in their activities.
The Structure of a Research Paper
The scientific article consists of the following main parts: the title of the article (heading), abstract, keywords, introduction, main part, conclusion (conclusions, analysis, generalization, criticism), and references.
The title of the article should carry out two tasks. It should reflect the content of the article and to attract the interest of readers. Just like the text of the paper itself, the title is written in the scientific style and reflects its content as correctly as possible. It is advisable to include in the headline several keywords relevant to the subject matter.
The heading is followed by an abstract. The presence of an annotation is not necessary, but it is desirable, while it should be brief, but at the same time meaningful. The annotation provides information about the author/authors of the paper, briefly highlights the scientific problem, the objectives and the main author’s conclusions in a condensed form. Also in the annotation, the scientific novelty of the article is reflected.
In the introduction, one should speak about the object and subject of research, outline the research methods used (equipment, measurement parameters, etc.), and formulate a hypothesis. It will not be superfluous to reflect the results of the work of predecessors.
The main part is the most extensive and important section of the scientific paper. It gradually expands the process of research, outlines the reasoning that led to conclusions. If the article is written based on the results of experiments, it is necessary to describe them in detail, to reflect the stages and intermediate results. If some experiments were unsuccessful, it is also worth to tell about them, revealing the conditions that affected the unsuccessful outcome and the methods for eliminating the shortcomings.
The conclusion constitutes the main achievements of the author. All conclusions should be objective, without author’s interpretation.
