Useful tips to create an outline for your essay - Sample Essay

Creating an essay outline

It is designed to recapitulate and put together the main concepts of your paper. An excellent outline will save your time and help in developing a successful essay out of it.

What to start with?

Read the instruction thoroughly. Highlight the key points and verify whether you fully understand what you’re expected to write. Then think about a topic and contemplate on it. Write all the ideas that come to your mind, reread and choose the best ones. Brainstorming is a helpful technique in such cases. Arrange the ideas in more or less logical sequence. After all the preparations are done, the next step is to put it all in order, e.g. to write an outline.

Introduction

Several attractive sentences to make the text desirable for the readers are vital in your introductory paragraph. It can be a nice quotation, an anecdote or just an interesting point of view. The last sentence here is a thesis – a detailed and effective statement expressing the essence of the paper.

Main body

As usual, there are more than three body paragraphs. Each begins with a topic sentence supported by three or more evidence – various quotes, statements, points of view, facts, etc. Link body paragraphs with transition words in the ending or at the beginning of each of them.

Conclusion

Its role is to sum up the key points of your essay. Bear in mind that it’s not preferable to add a new idea. Dwell upon the already written ones. The conclusion should be strong and persuasive, so think carefully what to write here.

Alphanumeric structure

This is the most popular and widespread way of ordering. To mark the main paragraphs or sections, use the roman numerals (I, II, III, IV…). Within them, there always are key points marked by a capital letter (A, B, C, D…). If the further subdivision is needed, use Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, 4…) and then lowercase letters (a, b, c, d…).

Before writing the essay, you need to create an outline. It not only saves your time but also reduces the possibility of getting stuck with the lack of ideas. Use out pieces of advice and believe in yourself!
