Critical Evaluation - Sample Essay

The topic I chose for this evaluation is the car. The first source I chose was titled “Cars: A Celebration”, an encyclopedia of sorts on the different types of classical cars. The author of this source wants seems to want to accomplish the task of establishing a keen eye and taste for the classic car by choosing a variety of “fascinating” specimens to prove his point that classic cars are still interesting and popular cars. If one were to search for information related to the good aspects of classical cars or just for those that like classic cars, then it would definitely be a valid source. The index contains a list of cars by model and year of production, which is very useful if one were to look for a specific car. The table of contents contains a much more general outlook on the cars, simply by brand of car, but not the specific model of car.

The audience of this book seems to be the classic car collector, me (to convince me to enjoy classic cars), and simply the person that likes classic cars. Thus, the book does provide my needs as a reader for this kind of book. This book provides facts and a chart by each car to show the stats of the car, the engine, year etc but does not provide external sources where the information may have been obtained.

The information in this book does provide sufficient information to satisfy the audiences needs. Fortunately, the vocabulary is neutral and does not provoke the reader with emotion on the reasons for liking classic cars but provides solid facts that can persuade someone into liking classic cars. This book does not provide generalizations; the information is stated specifically and is extremely descriptive. The author provides some primary accounts of actually using the cars but most of the information is provided as a secondary account. The source is relatively recent as it was published in Great Britain in 2001 and the author is quite knowledgeable on this topic as the information suggests. Conclusively, this source does provide sufficient information for the audience and is definitely a respectable source despite the few limitations that it may have.

The 2nd source for the car that I chose is the magazine titled “Wired, the Future of the Electric Car”. The author of this article seems to want accomplish the task of introducing and persuading the benefits of the electric powered car in hopes of future purchase of the car and possible funding. This article does provide information on the electric car itself and the benefits it would have on ozone depletion recovery for instance. It provides some information on the topic but since it is not actually produced yet it is limited to the amount of info it can provide. It unfortunately does not provide citations from external sources.

The audience itself can range from me to the average consumer of cars since he is trying to prove the point of the benefits of electric cars. The language of this article does have some emotion but it does provide promising points on the benefits of the electric car. The author bases his information on theory I imagine since it has not been perfected yet though he does provide specific information. The article is extremely recent, being published in this issue of Wired magazine this year sometime. The author is quite credible since he seems to know what he is talking about on the subject. Ultimately this source is somewhat biased and limited in some ways but is quite an interesting article that proves good points on the use of the electric car.

The last source that portrays the car is the online article on the Ford website titled “Imagine: A Daily Commute Without Using A Drop of Gas”. The author of this article, Tony Posawatz, the Vehicle Line Director of the E-Flex Systems and the Chevy Volt, General Motors Corp. wants to accomplish the task of promoting the electric that his division is currently developing. This source contains plenty of articles on cars and future fuel efficient products however this article promotes the use of the future electric car. It contains a citation from Tony Posawatz, “We have devoted significant resources to this project: Over 200 engineers and 50 designers are working on the Volt alone, and another 400 are working on related subsystems and electric components. That’s how important we think this is, and that’s how much stock we place in the future of extended-range electric vehicles like the Chevy Volt.”

This quote obviously seems to promote its own product, but it does elaborate on the costly effects of attempting to create this electrical powered car. The audience is intended to be us and the car consumers. The author provides very limited information on the production of the car but relies more on the engine and power source of the car which is valid information. The language is somewhat emotional and does contain some bias due to the emotional attachment to the product but it does provide information on how costly this procedure is.

Yes it does provide primary sources due to the author being the head of the operation and is watching the production of the car. The source is recent as it was created early this year. The author is quite credible as he is foreseeing the creation of the Ford Volt. There are no generalizations on the information that is provided but there is limited information. Ultimately this source is reliable in the sense that it provides the costs of creating a new powered car but it does contain certain limitations.
